Beara Holiday Activities

Castletownbere, the largest white fishing port in Ireland is the main town of the Beara Peninsula - a finger like peninsula in the South West Coast of Ireland. This rugged, unspoilt area is blessed with some of the most spectacular scenery in Ireland - indeed it has been said that it is Ireland's best kept secret. There is plenty to do for all the family, or if you just want to escape for some peace and quietness - then you will not be disappointed. With a population of just 1,500 in the port of Castletownbere and almost 5,000 in the whole peninsula, the community is closely knit and very welcoming to visitors.

There are numerous activities for everyone to enjoy. As Castletownbere is situated in the centre of Beara, you can travel the Ring of Beara route with a choice of three different roads, to the West towards Allihies, to the north towards Urhan, Eyeries Ardgroom or to the East towards Adrigole and the Healy Pass. A nine hole links Golf Course, on the eastern side of the town welcomes visitors. Sea-Angling and Coastal trips can be arranged, with rods and tackle for hire if needed. Shore Angling can also be enjoyed at the numerous designated sites. The famous Beara Way Walking Route has many short loop routes around Castletownbere, or for the avid walker can be opened up into longer treks. The full route is 125 miles long.

A vast majority of visitors to the area are return visitors - people who holidayed here and loved it so much - come back time and time again. Indeed many have purchased their own holiday homes here - and visit every opportunity they can.

Take a stroll down the road from the cottage to Tralahan Pebble Beach for that refreshing swim in crystal clear waters or journey westwards to the beautiful sandy beaches at Allihies or Garnish.

If you would prefer a Seaweed Bath - then a trip to Irises will help ease those tensed muscles from the stresses and strains of everyday life - offering various different therapies.

For those leisurely days - tour the rugged Ring of Beara - taking in the wonderful unspoilt scenery that is Ireland's best kept secret. Visit the numerous Archaeological Sites- Stone Circles and Ancient Ring Forts, Ogham Stones, O'Sullivan Bere Castle & Puxley Mansion Ruins, Take a trip to Dursey Island by Cable Car (only one of its kind over water in Western Europe) and while there take in some Bird Watching - some very rare birds have been spotted there. Visit the Copper Mines in Allihies . Pay a visit to the Buddhist Centre where you will be blown away with its location and rugged scenery - yet very peaceful and relaxing. Beara is an Artist's Haven and there are numerous Art Galleries to visit and purchase that painting to remind you of your holiday. Watch the fishermen unload their catch at the pier in Castletownbere.

Visit the Maritime Museum - Call of the Sea - to get a flavour of what the marine history ot the area is like - well worth a visit.
